How Tide Clocks Work
Tides are based on the Lunar cycle – 24 hours and 50.5 minutes, the approximate time it takes for the Moon to rotate the Earth. Tides also rotate in 6 hours increments. To read a tide clock, what is normally 12 o'clock is high tide, which means, you guessed it – it's high tide. As the hand continues down towards "low tide", you read how many hours until low tide (6 o'clock). So "5" (typically looks like 1 o'clock), means it is 5 hours until low tide. 4, 3, 2, 1 hours until low tide. As the hand continues past "low tide" you start to read how many hours until high tide.
